Cavafy, a Greek-language poet of Alexandria, brings Hellenistic and Byzantine history into contact with private experiences of desire, ageing, regret and memory. Ancient rulers and cities are not remote decoration: political defeat, missed opportunity and late recognition become present human experience. In the erotic poems, rooms, streets and remembered bodies are places where time meets longing.
