گزیده ای از اشعار رومی به فارسی و انگلیسی – (آتش در آب)

اين سخن آبى است از درياى بىپايان عشق

از ميان درياى ابيات و غزليات نغز شمس، برگزيدن دُرّهاى ناب كارى است بهنوبه خود فرحناك و شوقانگيز، كه در نهايت به ۱۷۵ غزل رسيد كه از هريك بين سه تا هفت بيت (شاهبيتالغزل) به انگليسى درآمد. معيار و مبناى گزينش شعرها جاذبه كلام بود و هم جلوه آن ابيات در ادبيات انگليسى، چرا كه در مقام ترجمه، سزاست كه متن ادبى به ادبيات مقصد برگردد و نه فقط به زبان مقصد، كه خود فرايندى است از جنس مكاشفه در پهنه ادبيات تطبيقى.

نظر به شيفتگى روزافزون غرب نسبت به مولانا ترجمههاى متعددى از غزليات شمس به انگليسى منتشر شده است، به طور عمده در دو زمره: يكى ترجمههاى آكادميك مثل آثار نيكلسن و آربرى كه در آن شعريّت سخن فداى پژوهندگى شده است، و ديگرى اقتباسهاى ميانمايه پاپ كه شعر مولانا را به گفتارى احساساتى و عوامانه فرومىكاهد. اميد كه كوشش اين دفتر يكسره غرق در اين دو ورطه مبتذل و فاضلانه نباشد.
