Ernest Miller Hemingway (21 July 1899–2 July 1961) was an American novelist, short-story writer and journalist who received the 1954 Nobel Prize in Literature. Born in Oak Park, Illinois, to physician Clarence Edmonds Hemingway and musician Grace Hall Hemingway, he was the second of six children. Summers in northern Michigan, early newspaper work at the Kansas City Star and a severe wound sustained while serving with the Red Cross in Italy supplied lasting material for his fiction. In 1920s Paris he moved among Gertrude Stein, Ezra Pound, James Joyce and F. Scott Fitzgerald. He wrote The Sun Also Rises between July 1925 and April 1926; its publication on 22 October 1926 helped define the literary image of the “Lost Generation.” A Farewell to Arms, For Whom the Bell Tolls and The Old Man and the Sea are among his other major works. Hemingway married Hadley Richardson, Pauline Pfeiffer, Martha Gellhorn and Mary Welsh, and had three children: Jack, Patrick and Gregory, later also known as Gloria. After years of injuries, repeated concussions, two African plane crashes, chronic pain, severe depression and treatment at the Mayo Clinic, he died by suicide at his home in Ketchum, Idaho, six days after his final discharge. The evidence supports naming suicide as the manner of death, but not reducing his complex mental and physical decline to one simple cause. In this AlefBa edition, Hemingway is the author of The Sun Also Rises and Ahmad Kasaipour is the Persian translator of the Hermes edition.
