The Freedom to Be Free: the Persian collection
This collection brings together political writing by Hannah Arendt and an interview with her. This is the Persian translation by Hajar Kharghani, published by Khoob. The Freedom to Be Free is the original title of its opening essay. Khoob’s selection has its own contents and should not be confused with other English collections bearing that title.
Freedom, revolution and participation
The opening essay asks what it means for people to have a voice in public life. The essay distinguishes release from oppression from the conditions that make political freedom possible. Her discussion of revolution considers both the removal of an old authority and the creation of space for equal participation. Poverty and the demands of everyday survival also enter this account.
The four parts of this edition
Khoob’s Persian selection contains the title essay, the afterword to its German translation, a text on truth and politics, and a television interview with the author. Its third part considers the relationship between truth and political life. Through conversation, readers can approach her ideas about thought and understanding from another angle.
Readers interested in political thought and revolutions can follow the question of freedom through the opening essay, then read it alongside the discussion of truth and the author’s own reflections in conversation.
Author and Persian edition details
Hannah Arendt was a twentieth-century political thinker whose books include The Origins of Totalitarianism and The Human Condition. This selection introduces Persian-language readers to a small part of her wider body of writing and interviews.
