معرفی کتاب شیطان و خدا
«شیطان و خدا» نمایشنامهای فلسفی و تاریخی از ژانپل سارتر است که در سه پرده و یازده مجلس نوشته شده و ابوالحسن نجفی آن را به فارسی ترجمه کرده است. نمایش نخست اثر در هفتم ژوئن ۱۹۵۱ در تئاتر آنتوان پاریس و با کارگردانی لویی ژووه برگزار شد.
داستان در بستر جنگ دهقانان آلمان در سدهٔ شانزدهم شکل میگیرد. گوتز، فرماندهای جنگجو، ابتدا میخواهد شر مطلق را انتخاب کند و سپس تصمیم میگیرد خیر مطلق را بیازماید. حرکت او میان این دو قطب، زندگی ناستی، هاینریش، هیلدا و مردمی را که زیر فشار جنگ و قدرت قرار دارند دگرگون میکند. نمایش نشان میدهد تصمیمی که ظاهراً فقط به وجدان یک فرد مربوط است، در جهان واقعی برای دیگران پیامد دارد.
سارتر پرسش وجود یا عدم وجود خدا را به مسئلهای زمینیتر پیوند میزند: انسان آزاد با مسئولیت انتخاب خود چه میکند؟ ایمان، تردید، خشونت سیاسی، شورش، شکست آرمانگرایی و ضرورت عمل جمعی در گفتوگوهای نمایشی به هم میرسند. گوتز کمکم درمییابد که پاکی اخلاقیِ جدا از تاریخ و زندگی مردم میتواند به صورت دیگری از خودخواهی و ویرانی تبدیل شود.
نجفی در مقدمهٔ ترجمه میان زبان نمایشنامه بهعنوان اثر ادبی و زبان مناسب برای اجرای صحنهای تفاوت میگذارد. نثر او میکوشد دقت اندیشهٔ سارتر، ریتم گفتوگو و قابلیت شنیدهشدن دیالوگ روی صحنه را همزمان حفظ کند. به همین دلیل این ترجمه فقط انتقال داستان نیست و برای خوانندگان ادبیات نمایشی، فلسفهٔ اگزیستانسیالیستی و تاریخ ترجمه در ایران نیز اهمیت دارد.
در اطلاعات نسخهٔ موجود فروشگاه، ناشر نیل، تعداد صفحات ۲۰۰ و نوع جلد شومیز ثبت شده است. فصلنامهٔ مترجم چاپ سوم این ترجمه را در سال ۱۳۵۱ ثبت میکند، اما سال چاپ همین نسخهٔ فیزیکیِ موجود در فروشگاه با مدرک قابلاعتماد مشخص نشده است؛ بنابراین سالی حدس زده نمیشود.

About The Devil and the Good Lord
The Devil and the Good Lord is a philosophical and historical play by Jean-Paul Sartre, written in three acts and eleven scenes and translated into Persian by Abolhassan Najafi. The play premiered at the Théâtre Antoine in Paris on 7 June 1951 in a production directed by Louis Jouvet.
Set during the sixteenth-century German Peasants’ War, the story follows the warlord Goetz. He first tries to choose absolute evil and then resolves to test absolute good. His movement between those extremes transforms the lives of Nasty, Heinrich, Hilda and people caught under the pressure of war and power. The play demonstrates that a decision which appears to concern one person’s conscience can have concrete consequences for everyone around that person.
Sartre connects the question of God’s existence to a more immediate problem: what does a free human being do with responsibility for a choice? Faith, doubt, political violence, revolt, failed idealism and collective action meet in the drama’s arguments. Goetz gradually learns that moral purity separated from history and other people’s lives can become another form of selfishness and destruction.
In his preface, Najafi distinguishes the language of drama as literature from language intended for performance. His Persian prose seeks to preserve Sartre’s philosophical precision, the rhythm of the exchanges and dialogue that can still be spoken on stage. The translation is therefore relevant not only for its story, but also for readers interested in theatre, existentialism and the history of literary translation in Iran.
The store record lists Nil as publisher, 200 pages and a paperback binding. Motarjem Journal documents a third printing of Najafi’s translation in 1972, but reliable evidence does not establish the printing year of the exact physical copy offered by the store, so no edition date is guessed.
