About The Gambler
The Gambler by Fyodor Dostoevsky, translated into Persian by Saleh Hosseini, follows Alexei Ivanovich, a young Russian tutor in the fictional spa town of Roulettenburg. Living at a European hotel with the indebted General’s household, he is in love with Polina and approaches the roulette table partly to prove his courage and win her attention.
The family’s expectation of an inheritance, the grandmother’s sudden arrival at the casino, and Alexei’s movement between humiliation, hope and intoxicating wins turn the novel into a concentrated study of addiction, money and power in relationships. Dostoevsky draws on his own experience of gambling to capture both the rush of winning and the inability to stop.
