Nun va al-Qalam (The Letter N and the Pen) is a historical allegory and political satire by Jalal Al-e Ahmad, first published in 1961; it is a novel, not an essay collection or a biography of its author. Set in an imaginary city whose atmosphere recalls the early Safavid period, it contrasts two professional scribes. Mirza Asadollah is poor but principled and refuses to sell his pen to power, while Mirza Abdolzaki is prosperous, opportunistic and comfortable around influence. When the ruler known as the Qibla of the World flees and the qalandars take control, an old order collapses and a movement promising justice inherits the city. Revolutionary fervour soon collides with the work of government: administrative failure, the entanglement of religion and authority, and renewed coercion place the uprising’s ideals under pressure. Al-e Ahmad uses the rhythms of oral storytelling, deliberately archaic diction and dark humour to ask whether changing rulers can produce freedom without personal responsibility and a deeper critique of power. The title alludes to the opening of the Qur’anic chapter of the Pen while also invoking the writer who earns bread through the pen: what does a writer owe to livelihood, truth and authority?
