روایت فقر در آس و پاسها
در بخش پاریس، نویسنده از گرسنگی و کار در پشت صحنهٔ رستوران‌ها و هتل‌ها می‌گوید. بخش لندن به زندگی بی‌خانمان‌ها و جست‌وجوی غذا و محل خواب می‌پردازد. آدم‌هایی که در این مسیر می‌بیند، هر کدام زبان، عادت‌ها و شیوهٔ گذران زندگی خود را دارند.

جورج اورول نویسنده و روزنامه‌نگار انگلیسی بود که با نام اصلی اریک بلر در سال ۱۹۰۳ به دنیا آمد و در سال ۱۹۵۰ درگذشت. «مزرعهٔ حیوانات» و «۱۹۸۴» از آثار شناخته‌شدهٔ او هستند. در نوشته‌های غیرداستانی‌اش نیز به فقر، قدرت و تجربهٔ زندگی مردم توجه داشت.

The Paris section takes readers into hotel and restaurant kitchens, where hard work and hunger sit close together. In London, the account follows people without stable housing as they look for food and a bed. The people encountered have distinctive voices, routines and ways of getting through the day.
Drawing on the author’s experiences, the book connects memoir with social reporting. First published in 1933, it was his first full-length book. Beyond the practical shortage of money, the narrative explores the humiliation, boredom and exhaustion that can accompany poverty.
