Mr Puntila and His Man Matti — Power, Promises and Comedy

Mr Puntila and His Man Matti is a play by . This is a physical book in Persian, published by Morvarid and translated by Sharif Lankarani. Its central relationship, between a Finnish landowner and his chauffeur, opens up questions about the distance between an employer and the person who serves him.

Puntila’s changing face

When drunk, Puntila is sociable and generous. Sobriety brings back his harshness and concern for his own advantage. His chauffeur Matti has to deal with the consequences. Each change of mood makes the landowner’s friendly promises a fresh test of trust.

The comedy grows out of the gap between words and actions. Personal warmth may be appealing, while the underlying relationship of ownership and obedience remains in place. Matti’s practical perspective raises questions about generosity and equality.

How the play took shape

Brecht wrote the work in 1940 during his exile in Finland. A play and stories by Hella Wuolijoki were among its sources. He reworked this material into his own dramatic structure, bringing the conflicting interests of master and servant into sharper focus.

Reading and discussing the play

Readers interested in drama, social comedy and everyday expressions of power will find a clear starting point for discussion. Try setting Puntila’s promises beside his later decisions and following Matti’s responses. Which promises become actions, and who bears the cost when a decision changes?

A reading group might also compare its members’ responses to Puntila’s friendliness. Can good manners alone create trust? This is a suggested discussion question, and different answers can be tested against situations in the play.

About the Persian edition
