About Journey to the End of the Night

Journey to the End of the Night is the dark, formally disruptive masterpiece by Louis-Ferdinand Céline (لویی فردینان سلین). First published in 1932, it follows Ferdinand Bardamu from the battlefields of the First World War through colonial Africa, American factories, and the poor districts of Paris.

With a bitter, angry, and often sharply comic voice, Bardamu witnesses war, exploitation, poverty, and the absurdity of modern institutions. The novel’s spoken rhythms and fractured style bring the language of the street into literature, creating an experience that is forceful and deliberately uncomfortable.

Céline’s black humour leaves no hero or ideology unquestioned. Bardamu’s physical journey also becomes an investigation of fear, survival, solitude, and the limits of human sympathy, helping secure the novel’s place in modern French literature.
