Milani combines personal memory, portraiture and historical reflection to argue that history is shaped not only by structures and leaders but also by people’s action, resistance and silence.
The first volume begins with the author’s parents and relatives before moving through figures from politics, scholarship, literature and the arts, including Azar Nafisi, Gholam-Hossein Saedi, Hamid Enayat and Reza Baraheni, alongside activists, publishers, painters and journalists.
