About The Joke
The Joke is the first published novel by Milan Kundera, originally issued in Czech in 1967. This copy is the Persian translation by Forough Pouryavari, published by Sales under ISBN 9786004057974.
Ludvik Jahn, a university student and active Communist Party member, writes an ironic line on a postcard to tease his solemn friend Marketa. His private joke is treated as political evidence: he is expelled from the party and university and sent to a forced-labour unit in the mines. Years later, Ludvik tries to avenge himself by pursuing Helena, the wife of Pavel Zemanek, who helped bring about his downfall, but the reality of other people’s lives no longer fits the plot he has constructed.
The narration moves among several voices, connecting personal memory with official history, Moravian folk music, faith, love and political opportunism. Kundera shows how power can detach a joke from its intended meaning and turn it into a fate, and how revenge cannot recover lost time. The novel’s humour is not light relief but a form of resistance to a world that permits only one authorised meaning.
