شانن با تکیه بر اسناد و تجربه دانشجویان نشان میدهد شبکهای که برای دیپلماسی فرهنگی و نوسازی ساخته شده بود، به شکلگیری ائتلافهایی میان جوانان ایرانی و کنشگران مترقی آمریکایی کمک کرد. این گروهها حمایت واشنگتن از حکومت پهلوی را نقد کردند و زبان حقوق مدنی و حقوق بشر را به منازعه سیاسی آوردند. کتاب بدون فروکاستن انقلاب ایران به یک علت واحد، یکی از تناقضهای مهم سیاست آمریکا و پیامدهای پیشبینینشده آموزش فرامرزی را روشن میکند.

About Losing Hearts and Minds
Losing Hearts and Minds: American-Iranian Relations and International Education during the Cold War is a history by Matthew K. Shannon. This edition is the Persian translation by Sogand Rajabinasab, published by Parseh.
The book examines relations between Iran and the United States from the aftermath of the Second World War to the 1979 Iranian Revolution through the lens of international education. Student-exchange programmes were intended to strengthen cultural ties and train managers and specialists for Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi’s development plans, yet American campuses also became places where Iranian dissidents could organise.
Drawing on archives and student experiences, Shannon shows how a network built for cultural diplomacy and modernisation helped create alliances between Iranian youths and progressive Americans. They challenged Washington’s support for the Pahlavi government and brought the language of civil and human rights into political debate. Without reducing the revolution to a single cause, the book reveals a central contradiction of U.S. policy and the unintended consequences of cross-border education.
