About The Voice of the Dead
The Voice of the Dead is a short novel by Hamid Amjad, first published in 2019. In a continuous monologue, the narrator Kaveh recalls life with his twin brother Keyvan, their childhood, university years and his attachment to Sanam. As the account develops, however, the boundary between memory, imagination and self-justification becomes increasingly unstable.
Keyvan’s interest in poetry, language and history initially contrasts with Kaveh’s practical outlook, but jealousy, loss and mental turmoil begin to mix each brother’s traits into the other. Kaveh projects stories of twins, love, betrayal and revenge across millennia, constructing ancient counterparts for his present situation. The historical sweep reveals less about an objective past than about the narrator’s needs.
Through an unreliable narrator and precise play with language, Amjad asks the reader to distinguish what happened from what may have been invented to defend a choice. Revealing more would weaken the experience of this compact novel; much of its force lies in the gradual displacement of Kaveh and Keyvan’s identities and the reinterpretation of brotherhood.
