«نون والقلم» رمان تاریخی و تمثیل سیاسی جلال آل‌احمد (Jalal Al-e Ahmad) است، نه مجموعه مقاله و نه کتابی با عنوان انگلیسی «نان و قلم». داستان با لحن قصه‌های عامیانه به سراغ دو میرزابنویس، میرزا اسدالله و میرزا عبدالزکی، می‌رود: اولی کم‌درآمدتر اما درگیر پرسش‌های اخلاقی و اجتماعی است و دومی از سازگاری با صاحبان نفوذ سود می‌برد. در شهری دور از زمان معاصر، فرار حاکمان راه را برای قدرت‌گرفتن قلندرها باز می‌کند. وعده عدالت و همراهی مردم شور می‌آفریند، اما اداره شهر، کمبود منابع، رقابت منافع، فشار روحانیان و بازگشت سازوکارهای سرکوب نشان می‌دهد تصرف قدرت با تغییر مناسبات قدرت یکی نیست. دو کاتب در دل این دگرگونی باید تصمیم بگیرند قلم خود را در خدمت چه کسی و چه روایتی بگذارند. آل‌احمد با فاصله تاریخی، تجربه حزب‌ها، دولت و روشنفکران ایران معاصر را به زبان تمثیل می‌آورد؛ بااین‌حال، ایرانیکا تأکید می‌کند که جذابیت رمان از پیام سیاسی فراتر می‌رود. ساختار برگرفته از قصه عامیانه، نثر گفتاری، طنز، شخصیت‌های زنده و کشمکش میان تعهد و مصلحت، آن را به اثری مستقل در داستان‌نویسی او تبدیل کرده‌اند. اثر نخستین‌بار در ۱۳۴۰/۱۹۶۱ منتشر شد و در ترجمه انگلیسی با عنوان «By the Pen» شناخته می‌شود. این نسخه ۱۶۴صفحه‌ای نشر جامه‌دران با شابک واقعی نسخه، جایگزین شابک عمومی و نامعتبر پیشین شده است.

By the Pen is a historical novel and political allegory by Jalal Al-e Ahmad—not an essay collection and not a book called Bread and the Pen. Told in the register of a traditional folk tale, it follows two professional scribes, Mirza Asadollah and Mirza Abdozzaki. The first is poorer but more seriously engaged with moral and social questions; the second benefits from accommodation with people of influence. In a city removed from the author’s own time, the flight of the old rulers opens the way for a band of qalandars to seize power. Promises of justice and popular participation generate hope, yet governing the city, scarce resources, competing interests, clerical pressure and the return of coercive machinery expose the difference between capturing power and transforming it. Swept into these changes, the two scribes must decide whose authority and whose version of events their pens will serve. The remote setting allows Al-e Ahmad to reflect on parties, government and intellectual responsibility in modern Iran. Encyclopaedia Iranica nevertheless stresses that the novel’s appeal exceeds its topical allegory: its folk narrative structure, colloquial prose, humour, vivid incidents and conflict between commitment and expediency give it an independent literary force. First published in 1340/1961, it later appeared in English as By the Pen. This 164-page Jameh Daran edition uses the edition’s verified ISBN rather than the generic invalid number previously attached to the product.
