About The Loser
The Loser, originally published in German as Der Untergeher, is a novel by Thomas Bernhard. This Persian edition was translated by Abdollah Jamani and published by Navaye Maktoub under ISBN 9786008958161.
The narrator, Wertheimer and Glenn Gould meet as young piano students. Their encounter with Gould’s extraordinary genius alters the course of the other two lives: one abandons performance, while the other descends into comparison and defeat. Through the narrator’s recollections, the novel examines artistic ambition, perfectionism, envy, identity and the cost of measuring oneself against another person.
Bernhard builds the work through interior monologue, circling sentences, deliberate repetition and bleak humour. First published in 1983, the novel appears here in a 128-page Persian paperback recorded as a second printing from the Iranian year 1398.
