چراغها را من خاموش میکنم نخستین و مشهورترین رمان زویا پیرزاد (Zoya Pirzad) است؛ داستانی دقیق و چندلایه از زندگی کلاریس، زن ایرانی-ارمنی سیوچندسالهای که در آبادان دههٔ ۱۳۴۰ همراه همسرش آرتوش، پسر نوجوانش و دو دختر دوقلو زندگی میکند. روزهای او میان خرید، آشپزی، دوختودوز، برنامههای مدرسه و حفظ آرامش خانواده میگذرد؛ تا ورود المیرا سیمونیان، پسرش امیل و نوهاش امیلی به خانهٔ روبهرو، نظم آشنای این زندگی را آرامآرام تغییر میدهد.
پیرزاد بحران درونی کلاریس را با حادثههای پرهیاهو تعریف نمیکند. گفتوگوهای کوتاه، سکوتها، کارهای تکراری خانه و تکگویی درونی به خواننده نشان میدهند که چگونه میل، مسئولیت، عشق، عادت و هویت در زندگی روزمره به هم گره میخورند. حضور واژهها و تجربههای ارمنی، فارسی و انگلیسی نیز آبادان چندفرهنگی پیش از انقلاب را به بخشی زنده از رمان بدل میکند.
عنوان کتاب از جملهای میآید که کلاریس هر شب در پایان کارهایش میگوید. همین جملهٔ ساده، هم یک کار روزانه است و هم تصویری از خواستهها و زندگی خصوصیای که در تاریکی باقی میمانند. رمان بدون شعارزدگی دربارهٔ خانواده، زنان، تعلق قومی و امکان تغییر حرف میزند و به همین دلیل برای خوانندگان متفاوت معناهای گوناگونی پیدا میکند.
جوایز و انتشار بینالمللی
این رمان پس از انتشار نخست در سال ۱۳۸۰، در سال ۱۳۸۱ جایزهٔ کتاب سال، مهرگان ادب و بنیاد هوشنگ گلشیری را دریافت کرد و در جایزهٔ یلدا نیز تقدیر شد. ترجمهٔ انگلیسی آن با عنوان Things We Left Unsaid منتشر شده است؛ نشر مرکز عنوان لاتین اثر را I’ll Turn Off the Lights ثبت میکند.

About Things We Left Unsaid
Things We Left Unsaid is the English-market title of Cheragh-ha ra Man Khamoosh Mikonam, the first and most acclaimed novel by Zoya Pirzad. Set in 1960s Abadan, it follows Clarice, an Iranian-Armenian woman in her thirties who lives with her husband Artush, their teenage son and twin daughters. Her days revolve around shopping, cooking, sewing, school routines and keeping peace within the family—until Elmira Simonian, her son Emile and her granddaughter Emily move into the house across the street and quietly disturb that familiar order.
Pirzad does not stage Clarice’s inner crisis through melodrama. Brief conversations, silences, repeated household tasks and interior monologue reveal how desire, responsibility, love, habit and identity become entangled in ordinary life. Armenian, Persian and English words and experiences also make pre-revolutionary Abadan’s multicultural world a living part of the novel.
The Persian title comes from the sentence Clarice repeats each night after finishing her chores. It is both an everyday action and an image of private wishes and lives left in shadow. With restraint rather than slogans, the novel explores family, women’s interior lives, ethnic belonging and the possibility of change.
Awards and international publication
First published in Iran in 2001, the novel received the Iranian Book of the Year, Mehregan Adab and Houshang Golshiri Foundation awards, as well as recognition from the Yalda Literary Award. The English translation was published as Things We Left Unsaid; the Iranian publisher records the literal English title as I’ll Turn Off the Lights.
