Her Eyes (Cheshmhayash) is Bozorg Alavi’s best-known novel and a landmark of modern Persian fiction. It combines romance, art, memory and political resistance within a carefully constructed mystery. The story begins with a painting titled Her Eyes, one of the final major works of Master Makan, a celebrated painter and dissident whose life and death remain surrounded by questions.
The director of an art school has spent years trying to identify the unknown woman in the painting. His search leads him to Farangis, whose extended confession reconstructs her relationship with Makan, her emotional awakening, the class differences between them and the underground political world surrounding the artist. Her account does not reduce the painting to a single explanation; instead, it asks how private experience, public memory and an artist’s interpretation can produce different versions of truth.

After Makan dies in exile, his artworks are preserved at an art school. One portrait stands apart: the eyes of its unnamed subject seem to contain contradictory emotions.
