The Road Less Traveled
Honar-e Asheghi (Jadeh-ye Kamgozar) by M. Scott Peck, translated into Persian by Zahra Adhami, is the Persian edition of The Road Less Traveled, first published in 1978. The book examines personal growth, love, responsibility, traditional values and spiritual development.
Peck begins from the claim that life is difficult and that growth does not come from avoiding problems. He describes four practices of discipline: delaying gratification, accepting responsibility, dedication to truth and balancing. They are presented not as self-punishment but as ways to accept the short-term pain of solving a problem instead of the longer suffering created by denial.
In its discussion of love, the book distinguishes mature love from passing emotion and dependency. Peck defines love as the will and action to nurture one’s own or another person’s psychological and spiritual growth—sometimes through care and closeness, and sometimes through a difficult conversation, a boundary or respect for the other person’s independence.
The second half moves beyond psychology into worldview, spiritual experience and the concept of grace. This material reflects the author’s personal and professional perspective in the 1970s and is best read critically alongside newer knowledge and research.
