About The Suicide Shop
In a grey city where environmental crises and relentless bad news have worn away people’s hope, the Tuvache family has spent generations running a peculiar shop for customers who no longer want to live. Mishima and Lucrèce manage the family business with cold solemnity, and their older children fit naturally into the gloom. Then Alan, the youngest child, disrupts everything with his smile, playfulness and stubborn love of life.
Jean Teulé turns this macabre premise into a black comedy about contagious despair and the transforming force of hope. The clash between a business built around death and Alan’s delight in living, together with the novel’s bitter jokes and meaningful family names, creates a sharp short novel with a serious question beneath its fantasy: can joy survive in a place organised around sorrow and begin to change everyone it touches?
