Russell surveys several centuries of conflict between scientific inquiry and established religious teaching, showing how new evidence repeatedly changed humanity’s picture of the universe and its place within it.
The book considers the astronomical revolution, evolution, medicine, mind and body, determinism, mysticism, cosmic purpose, and the relationship between science and ethics. Russell distinguishes the testable method of science from dogmatic claims while also asking how far scientific knowledge can decide questions of value, meaning and the conduct of life.
