Elif Shafak, written Elif Şafak in Turkish, is a British-Turkish novelist, essayist, academic and public speaker born in Strasbourg on 25 October 1971. Raised chiefly by her mother and maternal grandmother, she spent parts of her youth in Ankara, Madrid, Amman, Cologne and Istanbul. She holds a PhD in political science, has taught in Turkey, the United States and the United Kingdom, and writes fiction in both Turkish and English. Her official 2026 biography records 21 books, including 13 novels, translated into 58 languages; she became President of the Royal Society of Literature in December 2025.
Shafak wrote the novel in English. Its Turkish version, «Aşk», was translated into Turkish by K. Yiğit Us and then extensively rewritten by Shafak before publication on 1 March 2009. Viking/Penguin published the English «The Forty Rules of Love» on 18 February 2010; the two titles and language editions therefore do not share one publication date. Arsalan Fasihi translated the Turkish «Aşk» into Persian and deliberately chose the established Persian market title «ملت عشق». Rumi and Shams of Tabriz are historical subjects and fictionalised characters in the novel, not its authors. The AlefBa Qoqnoos edition has ISBN 9789643119195 and 510 pages; the 432-page figure on Shafak’s official Turkish listing describes a different edition and must not replace the stock record.
