The Forty Rules of Love by Elif Shafak connects two narratives set in different periods. In contemporary Massachusetts, Ella Rubenstein is asked to assess a manuscript about the meeting of Rumi and Shams of Tabriz in thirteenth-century Konya. Reading it changes the direction of Ella’s life, while the historical strand follows the bond between Rumi and Shams and its effects on those around them through multiple narrators.
This is more than a conventional love story. Love, inner transformation, tolerance, prejudice, loneliness, and the courage to reconsider one’s choices are central to the novel. Its polyphonic structure lets readers see the same events from contrasting perspectives and gradually encounter the “forty rules of love” within the story, rather than as a detached sermon.
Arsalan Fasihi’s Persian Translation and the Qoqnoos Edition
This Persian edition was translated by Arsalan Fasihi from the Turkish text titled Aşk. In an interview about the translation, Fasihi explained that he traced Persian poems quoted in the novel back to their originals and devoted particular care and time to preserving the voices of its many narrators.
