As a movement of qalandars spreads, intellectuals must choose between participation, withdrawal, and compromise.
Through humour, oral storytelling, and historical allegory, Al-e Ahmad examines failed political movements, the distance between intellectuals and the public, the pursuit of power, and the betrayal of ideals.
