چنین کنند بزرگان is Najaf Daryabandari’s celebrated Persian rendering of Will Cuppy’s comic history The Decline and Fall of Practically Everybody. In brief, ironic biographies, Cuppy removes figures such as Alexander, Cleopatra, Hannibal, Henry VIII and Catherine the Great from the grand frame of official history and foregrounds their habits, errors and human contradictions.
The comedy is created by placing the apparently serious voice of historical writing beside unexpected details. Instead of simply praising or condemning its subjects, the book asks how historical reputation is produced and why formal accounts so often conceal the absurd dimensions of power, ambition and failure.
An established creative Persian title
چنین کنند بزرگان is not a literal translation of the English title. It is the established Persian market title chosen by Daryabandari, whose rendering recreates the humour through the resources of Persian prose. The distinction is kept explicit: the official Persian product title remains intact, while the original English title appears separately in the bibliographic details.
This Karnameh edition carries ISBN 9789644311291, runs to 224 pages and includes illustrations by Bahram Dabiri. Market records list both hardback and paperback issues under the same ISBN.
