داستان آشغالدونی دربارهٔ چیست؟
علی، نوجوانی بی‌سرپناه، همراه پدر بیمارش در نزدیکی یک بیمارستان روزگار می‌گذراند. آشنایی با آدم‌های پیرامون بیمارستان، آن‌ها را به دنیای تازه‌ای می‌کشاند. فروش خون و واسطه‌هایی که از نیاز دیگران سود می‌برند، بخشی از این جهان‌اند.
داستان از خلال تجربهٔ علی، نسبت میان درماندگی، منفعت و انتخاب را پیش می‌کشد. بیمارستان در این روایت فقط محل درمان نیست؛ مناسبات بیرون از آن نیز بر سرنوشت آدم‌ها اثر می‌گذارد. به همین دلیل، خواندن کتاب فرصتی برای تأمل دربارهٔ فقر و آسیب‌پذیری انسان فراهم می‌کند.
از آشغالدونی تا فیلم دایره مینا
فیلم «دایره مینا» به کارگردانی داریوش مهرجویی با همکاری ساعدی از همین داستان اقتباس شد. خواندن اثر ادبی در کنار تماشای فیلم، امکان مقایسهٔ روایت مکتوب با اقتباس سینمایی را فراهم می‌کند.
دربارهٔ نویسنده
غلامحسین ساعدی داستان‌نویس، نمایشنامه‌نویس و پزشک ایرانی بود. او در تبریز به دنیا آمد و در سال ۱۹۸۵ در پاریس درگذشت. علاوه بر داستان، نمایشنامه‌هایش را با نام «گوهر مراد» نیز می‌شناسند. مدخل نویسنده در دانشنامهٔ ایرانیکا اطلاعات بیشتری دربارهٔ زندگی و آثار او دارد.

The Rubbish Heap: life under the pressure of poverty
The Rubbish Heap, also known by its Persian title Ashghalduni, is a work of social fiction by Gholam-Hossein Saedi. This Negah edition contains the original Persian text. The English introduction here is a reading guide; the book itself is in Persian.
What is the story about?
At first, Ali, a homeless teenager, lives near a hospital with his ill father. Gradually, encounters around the hospital draw them into an unfamiliar world. For example, blood selling and the intermediaries who profit from other people’s need become part of their experience.
Through Ali’s perspective, the story raises questions about dependence, self-interest and the choices available to people in poverty. The hospital is more than a place of treatment: relationships around it also shape the characters’ lives. Consequently, the story offers a starting point for discussion of vulnerability and exploitation.
The connection with The Cycle
Dariush Mehrjui adapted the story for the film The Cycle, working with Saedi. Readers interested in Iranian cinema can therefore compare the written narrative with its screen adaptation.
About the author
Gholam-Hossein Saedi was an Iranian fiction writer, playwright and physician. Born in Tabriz, he died in Paris in 1985. His plays are also associated with the pen name Gowhar-e Morad. See Encyclopaedia Iranica for further biographical details.
