Oriental Despotism: A Comparative Study of Total Power by Karl August Wittfogel, translated into Persian by Mohsen Salasi, is a major and controversial work of comparative history and political theory. First published in 1957, it investigates links between water management, bureaucracy and concentrated power in agrarian societies across Asia and the Near East.
Wittfogel’s influential “hydraulic society” thesis argues that large irrigation systems could encourage powerful administrative structures and centralised rule.
