«سمفونی مردگان» رمان عباس معروفی (Abbas Maroufi) و یکی از شناختهشدهترین آثار داستانی معاصر ایران است. داستان در اردبیل سرد و برفی، عمدتاً در سالهای جنگ جهانی دوم، فروپاشی خانواده اورخانی را دنبال میکند: پدری مستبد، مادری گرفتار سکوت، یوسف، دوقلوهای آیدا و آیدین، و اورهان.
کانون رمان کشمکش آیدین، شاعر و کتابخوان خانواده، با پدر و برادر کوچکترش اورهان است؛ اورهان میخواهد وارث تجارت و اقتدار پدر باشد. معروفی روایت را به شیوه یک سمفونی در چند «موومان» میسازد: زاویه دیدها، صداها و زمانها تغییر میکنند و صحنههایی تکرارشونده هر بار معنای تازهای پیدا میکنند. تعصب، حسادت، مردسالاری، برادرکشی، حذف زنان، و ستیز هنر با قدرت در ساختار غیرخطی و شاعرانه رمان به هم میرسند.

About Symphony of the Dead
Symphony of the Dead, by Abbas Maroufi, is one of the best-known novels of contemporary Iranian literature. Set in cold, snowy Ardabil, largely during the Second World War, it follows the collapse of the Urkhani family: an authoritarian father, a mother confined to silence, Yussof, the twins Aida and Aydin, and Orhan.
At the novel’s centre is the conflict between Aydin, the family’s poet and reader, and his father and younger brother Orhan, who wants to inherit the father’s business and authority. Maroufi constructs the narrative like a symphony in several “movements”: viewpoints, voices and periods shift, and recurring scenes acquire new meanings with each return. Dogma, jealousy, patriarchy, fratricide, the erasure of women, and the struggle between art and power converge in the novel’s nonlinear, lyrical structure.
