About The Feast of the Goat
The Feast of the Goat is Mario Vargas Llosa’s political and historical novel about the final days of Rafael Trujillo’s dictatorship in the Dominican Republic. Three narrative lines converge: Urania Cabral’s return to Santo Domingo after decades abroad, the inner world of the dictator’s court, and the men who carry out the 1961 assassination plot.
Moving between past and present, Vargas Llosa shows how tyranny reaches beyond political institutions to reshape fear, loyalty, family life and personal memory. Trujillo’s death is not a neat ending to violence: the reprisals against the conspirators and Urania’s enduring trauma are central to the novel. Although grounded in historical events and figures, its shifting viewpoints and complex characterisation turn that history into a sustained examination of power, complicity and responsibility.
The original Spanish title is La fiesta del Chivo. Abdollah Kowsari translated this Persian edition. Published by Elm, it is a 624-page octavo hardback with ISBN 9789644052033.
