About Aristotle’s Politics
Politics by Aristotle is a foundational work of political philosophy. It begins by asking what end political association serves and how citizenship, constitutions and the common good should be defined. Aristotle classifies regimes not only by the number who rule but by whether they pursue a shared good or the advantage of the ruling group.
Its eight books begin with household, property and slavery; criticise models of the ideal state, including those of Plato; and then examine citizenship, kingship, aristocracy, polity, oligarchy and democracy, the causes of revolution and ways regimes preserve themselves. The final books consider the best political life, education, music and the formation of citizens. The work’s arguments for “natural slavery” and gender hierarchy are now rightly subject to severe criticism and should be read in historical context rather than as timeless prescriptions.
