تقابل آستین و لی فقط اختلاف دو شخصیت متضاد نیست. هر یک میل سرکوب‌شدهٔ دیگری را آشکار می‌کند و همین شباهت پنهان، درگیری را هم خنده‌دار و هم تهدیدکننده می‌سازد. شپرد با ماشین‌تحریر، فیلمنامهٔ وسترن، صحرا، نان‌برشته‌کن‌های دزدیده‌شده و خانه‌ای که کم‌کم ویران می‌شود، اسطورهٔ موفقیت آمریکایی، اصالت هنری، تجارت سینما، مردانگی و خشونت خانوادگی را زیر سؤال می‌برد.
نمایش نخستین‌بار در ۱۰ ژوئیهٔ ۱۹۸۰ در مجیک تئاتر سان‌فرانسیسکو، به کارگردانی رابرت وودراف، روی صحنه رفت و همان سال به پابلیک تئاتر نیویورک رسید. «غرب حقیقی» در سال ۱۹۸۳ فینالیست جایزهٔ پولیتزر نمایش شد. این اثر بعدها بارها در تئاترهای مهم اجرا شد و به یکی از شناخته‌شده‌ترین نمایشنامه‌های سم شپرد دربارهٔ خانواده و افسانهٔ غرب آمریکا بدل شد.

About True West
«غرب حقیقی» is the Persian translation of True West by Sam Shepard. This black comedy turns a rivalry between two brothers in their mother’s suburban California home into a struggle over identity, power and the right to tell the story of the “true” American West.
Austin, a disciplined screenwriter, has come to his mother’s house to work on a new project. The arrival of his older brother Lee, a desert drifter and petty thief, breaks the apparent calm. When Lee sells a Western film idea to Austin’s producer, Saul Kimmer, the brothers’ positions gradually reverse: Lee tries to become a writer, while Austin moves towards the disorder, theft and violence he had previously recognised only in his brother.
Austin and Lee are not simply opposites. Each reveals a repressed desire in the other, and this concealed resemblance makes their conflict both comic and threatening. Through a typewriter, a Western screenplay, the desert, stolen toasters and a house that slowly falls apart, Shepard questions the American success myth, artistic authenticity, the film business, masculinity and family violence.
The play premiered at San Francisco’s Magic Theatre on 10 July 1980 in a production directed by Robert Woodruff, and reached New York’s Public Theater later that year. True West was a finalist for the 1983 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. It has since been repeatedly revived and has become one of Shepard’s best-known plays about family and the mythology of the American West.
