About An Introduction to Metaphysics

An Introduction to Metaphysics is one of Henri Bergson’s clearest and most influential statements of philosophical method. In the first essay, Bergson distinguishes analysis—knowledge gained from outside through concepts and symbols—from intuition, an attempt to enter into the movement, change and duration of reality itself. His account of intuition, the absolute and lived time makes the essay an essential introduction to Bergsonism.

The companion essay, French Philosophy, offers a concise account of French thought from Descartes to Bergson’s own period, highlighting clarity of expression, continuity of invention and the close relationship between philosophy and science. The Persian volume also includes Gilles Deleuze’s afterword, “Return to Bergson,” together with a chronology, bibliographical guides and a glossary.

This edition is not a complete translation of the much larger collection La Pensée et le mouvant; it brings together two specific Bergson essays. The first was published in 1903 under the French title Introduction à la métaphysique, with An Introduction to Metaphysics as its established English title; La Philosophie française followed in 1915. This Persian translation by Seyed Ashkan Khatibi was published by Farhang Nashr-e Now as a 120-page first edition in 2023–2024, ISBN 9786004903493.
