About Against Nature (À rebours)
Against Nature (À rebours), published in Persian as Birah, is a landmark of nineteenth-century French Decadent literature by Joris-Karl Huysmans, translated into Persian by Kaveh Mirabbasi. Des Esseintes, an aristocrat disgusted with society, retreats to an isolated house to construct an entirely artificial world shaped by his private aesthetic obsessions.
Rather than relying on an event-driven plot, the novel explores its protagonist’s mind and tastes through literature, painting, perfume, music, religion and ennui. In this self-imposed isolation, Huysmans tests the boundaries between refinement and decline, beauty and illness, and escape from society and an inability to live.
