در تحلیل «خودفریبی»، انسان می‌کوشد خود را به یک نقش، شغل یا سرنوشت ثابت فروبکاهد تا از مسئولیت انتخاب فرار کند. اما آزادی در این کتاب آزادیِ بی‌حد و بیرون از جهان نیست؛ انسان همیشه در موقعیتی تاریخی و مادی قرار دارد و در همان وضعیت باید پاسخ‌گوی شیوهٔ عمل خود باشد. همین پیوند آزادی و مسئولیت، «هستی و نیستی» را به متنی دشوار اما ماندگار تبدیل کرده است.

این ترجمهٔ فارسی را مهستی بحرینی (Mahasti Bahraini) انجام داده و نشر نیلوفر منتشر کرده است. چون رکوردهای بازار برای چاپ‌های گوناگون این ترجمه تعداد صفحه‌های متفاوتی ثبت کرده‌اند و شمارهٔ قبلیِ درج‌شده در صفحه نیز معتبر نبود، شابک، تعداد صفحه و سال چاپِ نسخهٔ موجود تا بررسی شناسنامهٔ همان نسخه قطعی اعلام نمی‌شود.

Being and Nothingness: An Essay on Phenomenological Ontology by Jean-Paul Sartre is a central work of twentieth-century existentialist philosophy. It is not a novel organised around a central character. It is a philosophical inquiry that begins with consciousness and asks how human beings encounter the world, other people and their own freedom.

Sartre distinguishes the “being-in-itself” of things from the conscious “being-for-itself.” Consciousness is not a fixed object inside the mind: through distance, questioning and negation, it introduces the possibility of nothingness into human experience. From that argument emerge the book’s best-known analyses of bad faith, embodiment, the look of the Other, shame, desire, time and action.

Bad faith describes the attempt to reduce oneself to a fixed role, occupation or destiny in order to escape responsibility for choosing. Yet freedom here is not limitless or detached from the world. People always act within material and historical situations, and remain answerable for what they make of those conditions. This connection between freedom and responsibility is one reason the book remains demanding and influential.
