«هالیوود» رمان خودزندگینامهگون و طنز سیاه چارلز بوکفسکی (Charles Bukowski) دربارهٔ تجربهٔ واقعی او در نوشتن فیلمنامهٔ «بارفلای» و رساندن آن به پردهٔ سینماست. بوکفسکی آدمها و رویدادهای واقعی را پشت نامهای داستانی پنهان میکند و هنری چیناسکی، بدل ادبی همیشگی خود، را این بار وارد صنعت فیلم میکند.
چیناسکی پیشنهاد کارگردانی به نام جان پینچات را برای نوشتن فیلمنامهای با عنوان «رقص جیم بیم» میپذیرد. از همانجا مسیر داستان از میز نوشتن به جلسههای تأمین سرمایه، دفتر وکلا، انتخاب بازیگر، فیلمبرداری و نمایش نخست میرسد. هر بار که پروژه به تولید نزدیک میشود، پول ناپدید میشود، اختیار تصمیمگیری جابهجا میگردد یا سلیقهٔ صاحبان سرمایه با صدای نویسنده برخورد میکند.
این کتاب بهجای تصویر پرزرقوبرق هالیوود، سازوکار آشفتهٔ پشت صحنه را نشان میدهد: تهیهکنندگان نگران پول، ستارههای گرفتار شهرت، قراردادهای متزلزل و هنرمندانی که میکوشند اثر را زنده نگه دارند. طنز خشک بوکفسکی یک پرسش جدی را دنبال میکند: آیا نویسنده میتواند در صنعتی که هنر را پیوسته به سرمایه و شهرت تبدیل میکند، زبان و استقلال خود را حفظ کند؟

About Hollywood
Hollywood is Charles Bukowski’s darkly comic, autobiographical novel about his real experience writing the screenplay for Barfly and helping it reach the screen. Bukowski disguises real people and events behind fictional names and sends Henry Chinaski, his recurring literary alter ego, into the film industry.
Chinaski accepts director Jon Pinchot’s invitation to write a screenplay called The Dance of Jim Beam. The story then travels from the writing desk through financing meetings, lawyers’ offices, casting, shooting and the premiere. Whenever the project seems close to production, money disappears, authority changes hands or the interests of investors collide with the writer’s voice.
Instead of a glamorous portrait of Hollywood, the novel exposes the disorder behind the scenes: producers anxious about money, stars trapped by celebrity, unreliable contracts and artists trying to keep a film alive. Bukowski’s dry satire follows a serious question: can a writer preserve an independent voice inside an industry that repeatedly turns art into capital and fame?
This Persian edition is translated by Peyman Khaksar, edited by Ehsan Norouzi and published by Cheshmeh. The cover shown on this page identifies the eighth printing, a 300-page royal-octavo paperback.
