خورشید همچنان میدمد by Ernest Hemingway, translated into Persian by Ahmad Kasaipour, is a defining novel of the post-First World War “Lost Generation.” Jake Barnes, an American journalist living in Paris, travels with Lady Brett Ashley and friends to Spain for Pamplona’s San Fermín festival, where unrequited love, jealousy, drinking, friendship and the group’s concealed violence come to the surface.
The war wound is more than a memory and shapes the characters’ ability to create relationships or imagine a future. Brett pursues desire and freedom within a male-dominated world, while Jake is caught among affection, incapacity and loyalty. Bullfighting and the festival are not decorative scenery: discipline, performance, danger and death stand against the travellers’ uncertainty.
Spare prose and the force of omission
Hemingway builds tension through compressed sentences, apparently simple dialogue and the refusal to explain every emotion directly. The method later associated with his “iceberg” image asks readers to infer jealousy, shame, pain and moral collapse from behaviour and silence rather than from explicit commentary by the narrator.
