داستان در سال ۱۹۵۲ با عبدالله ده‌ساله و خواهر کوچکش پری در روستای شادباغ افغانستان آغاز می‌شود. تصمیمی که از فقر و درماندگی خانواده سرچشمه می‌گیرد، این خواهر و برادر را از یکدیگر جدا می‌کند؛ اما رمان به همان رویداد محدود نمی‌ماند. هر فصل صدا، زمان یا مکان تازه‌ای را دنبال می‌کند و نشان می‌دهد یک انتخاب خانوادگی چگونه در زندگی نسل‌ها و آدم‌های گوناگون ادامه پیدا می‌کند.

مسیر روایت از روستا و کابل به پاریس، سان‌فرانسیسکو و جزیرهٔ تینوس می‌رسد. در این ساختار موزاییکی، رابطهٔ خواهر و برادر، والد و فرزند، خدمتکار و مراقب کنار موضوع‌هایی چون حافظه، مهاجرت، احساس گناه، پیری، فداکاری و امکان آشتی قرار می‌گیرند. شخصیت‌ها قهرمان یا ضدقهرمان ساده نیستند؛ گاهی از روی محبت تصمیمی می‌گیرند که زخمی ماندگار بر دیگری می‌گذارد.

نسخهٔ موجود در الفبا چاپ بیست‌ودوم نشر ثالث است. رکورد همین چاپ، تاریخ انتشار ۱۰ اسفند ۱۴۰۱، شابک ۹۷۸۶۰۰۴۰۵۱۹۸۹، ۴۴۸ صفحه، قطع رقعی و جلد شومیز را ثبت می‌کند. اثر اصلی نخستین‌بار در ۲۱ مه ۲۰۱۳ منتشر شد و سومین رمان خالد حسینی بود.

Nedaye Koohestan is the established Persian title of And the Mountains Echoed by Khaled Hosseini. This edition was translated into Persian by Mehdi Ghabraie and published by Saless Publishing.

The story begins in 1952 with ten-year-old Abdullah and his little sister Pari in the Afghan village of Shadbagh. A decision born of poverty and desperation separates the siblings, but the novel does not remain confined to that event. Each chapter follows a new voice, time or place, revealing how one family choice continues through the lives of different people and generations.

The narrative travels from rural Afghanistan and Kabul to Paris, San Francisco and the Greek island of Tinos. Its mosaic structure places relationships between siblings, parents and children, servants and caregivers beside themes of memory, displacement, guilt, ageing, sacrifice and the possibility of reconciliation. The characters are not simple heroes or villains: an act intended as loving can leave another person with a lasting wound.
