About Sahm-e Man
Sahm-e Man is a novel by Parinoush Saniee that follows Massoumeh from her teenage years in pre-revolutionary Tehran. Passionate about education, she falls in love with a neighbourhood boy on her way to school. When her family discovers his letters, her brother responds with violence and her parents arrange her marriage to a man she has never met.
Her husband Hamid is a political dissident under the Shah, and his arrest binds Massoumeh’s family life to the country’s upheavals. Across five decades, the narrative brings the 1979 revolution, the Islamic Republic and the consequences of war into the intimate experience of one woman. Friendship, love, fear, motherhood and hope accompany a persistent question: how much of a life is shaped by personal choice, and how much by family, tradition and politics?
