Psychology and Religion by Carl Gustav Jung, translated into Persian by Abdolrahim Gavahi, is an extensive study of religious experience, symbolism and the psychological function of faith. As a psychologist, Jung does not decide whether a religion’s metaphysical claims are true or false; he treats religious experiences, dreams, rituals and sacred images as psychological realities whose effects can be studied.

This substantial Jami edition goes beyond the three well-known Yale lectures and brings together Jung’s writings on religion in the West and East. It follows themes including the autonomy of the unconscious, the numinous, archetypes, the Trinity, the Mass, the problem of evil, the Book of Job and psychological readings of Eastern traditions. Jung asks how religious symbols can mediate between consciousness and the unconscious, and why the loss of a symbol’s living meaning may produce psychological conflict.
