About Three Sisters and Others
Three Sisters and Others is a play by Hamid Amjad that reimagines the final years of Anton Chekhov and the dramatic world of his plays through an intertextual structure. It engages especially with Three Sisters, The Cherry Orchard and Uncle Vanya, while also tracing the presence of King Lear by William Shakespeare.
Amjad does more than place characters, situations and literary memories side by side. He asks how works from Russian and English theatre can encounter Iranian history and performance traditions. Chekhov’s illness, the end of an era, the collapse of home and family, and the difficulty of leaving the past connect several narrative and theatrical strands. The result is a play about theatre itself and the movement of characters across texts, periods and cultures.
