About They Both Die at the End
In Adam Silvera’s novel They Both Die at the End, shortly after midnight on September 5, Death-Cast tells Mateo Torrez and Rufus Emeterio that they will die before the day is over—but not when or how. The two teenage strangers find each other through the Last Friend app.
Cautious, isolated Mateo and bolder Rufus, who is carrying grief and anger of his own, spend their remaining hours in the city and try to live more fully in one day than fear has previously allowed. Knowing the ending from the outset does not remove the suspense; the novel instead asks how fear narrows choice and how friendship, love, forgiveness and attention to the present can give a finite life meaning.
