Bi-Tarsi
Bi-Tarsi is a dark, layered novel by Mohammadreza Kateb centred on Zad, a character without a name who is therefore called “the born one.” Janan hands him over to Ibn, and the struggle between them raises questions about naming, identity, knowledge, power, illness, and violence.
In the novel’s world, naming is not merely an act of language; it is a means of possession and of shaping another person’s fate. Zad moves from being nameless to becoming someone who removes the names of others, while the boundary between victim and agent of violence gradually becomes uncertain.
Through compressed prose and harsh imagery, Kateb examines fear and suffering not simply as external obstacles but as parts of the machinery of knowledge and power. Published by Saless, the novel is suited to readers of experimental and philosophical contemporary Persian fiction.
