Letter to a Child Never Born by Italian journalist and author Oriana Fallaci, translated into Persian by Zoya Goharin, takes the form of a working young woman’s monologue to the life developing inside her. Moving among fear, hope, anger, love and responsibility, the narrator asks whether it is just to bring another person into a world marked by inequality, violence and loneliness.
Motherhood as a choice, not a prescribed duty
Pregnancy is treated as a personal and ethical choice involving bodily autonomy, economic independence, family and social judgement, the relationship with the child’s father and the possibility of motherhood. Only the woman’s voice is heard directly, yet imagined replies from the unborn child and inward, trial-like scenes turn a private confession into a layered dialogue.
Fallaci allows contradictory feelings to remain in conflict. The narrator can defend life at one moment and fear the suffering awaiting the child at the next. The novel therefore resists reduction to a simple declaration either for or against abortion. Its letter form transforms a private crisis into public questions about freedom, responsibility, love, gender and the meaning of life.
Why the novel still matters
The book’s force lies in its uncomfortable honesty. Its narrator confronts social judgement, economic pressure and physical exhaustion without dismissing the value of life. The ending refuses an easy verdict or artificial consolation and takes the physical and emotional cost of choice seriously. First published in Italy in 1975, the work remains part of international conversations about motherhood, women’s agency and ethical responsibility.
